Fire and Burning Man
Burning Man is a fire arts festival (with lots of absurdist art, bizarre activities, and general fun) that happens in the Black Rock Desert every year around Labor Day. The Black Rock Desert (playa) is a salt flat (evaporated lake bed) known for dusty and hot conditions. Camping conditions are uncomfortable, but many camps opt for extravagant living — with porta potties above and beyond what the festival provides, showers, and hot cooking. I originally camped with Bioluminati, and most recently with Ardent Heavy Industries, who are responsible for camp Dance Dance Immolation. As a child project of my burning man experience, I wanted to document the interesting and fabulous variety of feet, shoes and boots that tread the playa every year. I also have taken an extension collection of fire photos. One of my fire photos is being used as the cover art for the album Dark Fire by British band Turin Brakes. See more fire photos by Kristen.
